An Overview
Elegant, charming, steeped in authentic, hardcore history yet equally blessed
with picture-postcard small towns, robust harvest festivals, a wealth of art
and culture and the lasting joy of large expanses of forest, enchanting castles
and fine wine and beer. And with Germany's reunification in 1990 - the beginning
of yet another chapter in Germany's multifarious history - the visitor is now
free to traverse the outermost points of this truly awesome country. Covering
an area of 357,030 sq km and with a population of 82 million germany presently
enjoys eminence in many of the world’s major industries: automotive, engineering,
chemicals, iron, steel, coal, electronics, environmental technology, food, clothing.
Active Vacation
If activity is what you are after, you'd be hard pressed to find a better region
than Munich. Don't miss out a trip to the Deutsches Museum, the world's
largest science and technology expo, which has dozens of hands-on activities
and absorbing demonstrations of human enterprise: from mining to star gazing.
The Englischer Garten is one of the largest city parks in Europe. Also within
reach of Munich are the Bavarian Alps and the picture postcard villages of Rothenburg
ob der Tauberin western. As Munich is a major transport terminal there’ll be
no short means of getting about.
Art Cities
Whilst Frankfurt is without doubt the financial and geographical centre
of western Germany (producing the bulk of Germany's wealth) over 10% of the
city's taxes are committed to culture. In Frankfurt you’ll find the The Städel
Museum with its world-class collection of works by artists from the Renaissance
to the 20th century. The Museum of Modern Art also boasts a breathtaking collection.
Frankfurt's music scene is vigorous and dynamic and the jazz is of especially
high quality.
Berlin is traditionally the heart of Germany and a visit here would not
be complete without a tiely stroll from Alexanderplatz to the Brandenburg Gate
along Unter den Linden. The Kulturforum nearby is a cluster of museums and concert
halls on the south-eastern side of Tiergarten that can literally take days to
explore.
Food & Wine
Lets face it, Germans are enthusiastic when it comes to beer and making merry.
The Winter Carnival (Fasching) season occurs throughout Germany, with big cities
such as Cologne (Köln), Munich and Mainz erupting into commotion just before
Ash Wednesday. And of course mention must be made of Oktoberfest, Munich's annual
lager frenzy although every little village has at least one wine festival per
year too, with the most famous being the Rhine in Flames series of festivals,
when water, lighting and fireworks provide a miraculous and combined spectacle.
Alternative Vacation
Whilst the Dachau concentration camp lying north-west of provides something
of a solemn trip, Lübeck in Germany's northernmost state, Schleswig-Holstein,
is alternatively a magnificent medieval town that's earned its place on UNESCO's
World Heritage list. Although it's accessible from Hamburg, Lübeck is off the
main tourist trails and can be a quiet alternative to the more extravagant attractions
of the south.
